Professional Experience:
At TozziniFreire Advogados, Marcelo Calliari has been a partner and co-chair of the Antitrust and International Trade practice groups since 2000. From 1998 to 2000, he was commissioner of CADE - the Brazilian Competition Commission, where he had previously also served as senior legal and international affairs advisor. While at CADE, Marcelo participated as a member of the official Brazilian delegation at various antitrust negotiations held at the WTO, OECD, FTAA and MERCOSUR. In addition, he worked as an economics journalist, editorial writer and New York correspondent for Folha de S. Paulo, the largest daily newspaper in Brazil.
Marcelo Calliari speaks frequently on competition and international trade issues, having spoken in conferences and events organized by the IBA - International Bar Association, the ABA – American Bar Association, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, IBRAC – Brazilian Institute for Competition and International Trade, Harvard Law School and many other institutions, taking place, among others, in Washington DC, New York, Chicago, London, Brussels, Prague, Florence, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok, Auckland, Mexico City, Santiago, Buenos Aires and several Brazilian cities.
Education:
• Doctor of Laws (PhD) degree in International Law from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in 2003.
• LL.M. degree from Harvard University Law School in 1996.
• Bachelor of Laws from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in 1989.
• Bachelor in Economic Sciences from the Economics School of Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) in 1989.
Professional Activities:
• Member of the Board of the International Bar Association (IBA) Trade and Customs Law Committee
• Vice-President of IBRAC – Brazilian Institute of Competition and International Trade Studies (the main antitrust think-tank in Brazil)
• Co-chair of the competition group of the Task Force on Regulatory Agencies of the AmCham - Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce.
• Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Competition Law International”, published by the Antitrust Committee of the International Bar Association
• Vice-chair of the International Trade Committee of CESA – the Brazilian Association of Law Firms.
• International consultant of the International Trade Centre (ITC) of the United Nations (UN) in the preparation of the issue on Brazil for the ITC series “Business Guides to Trade Remedies” (awaiting publication).
• Vice-president of the Legislation Committee of the Brazil-China Chamber of Development in Economic Exchange and International Trade.
